Popular upcoming Orkney events in 2016:

Orkney Jazz Festival: 22nd – 24th April.  The Jazz Festival is held in the Stromness Hotel, and showcases local jazz musicians as well as jazz musicians from the jazz scene within the UK.

Orkney Nature Festival: 16th – 22nd May.  It will feature events from a variety of individuals, groups and businesses around Orkney, coordinated by the local RSPB Scotland team. More details of the programme will be available in the new year.

Battle of Jutland Centenary Anniversary: 31st May.  Plans to commemorate the Battle of Jutland, the largest naval engagement of the First World War.  There will be a series of commemorative events including

  • A service at St Magnus Cathedral.
  • A commemorative event at the Royal Navy Cemetery at Lyness.
  • A wreath-laying ceremony at sea on Jutland Bank by British and German ships.
  • The opening of HMS Caroline in Belfast as a museum and visitor attraction.
  • The laying of commemorative paving stones to commemorate the four Victoria Cross recipients from the Battle of Jutland.
  • Orkney Island Council’s wider programme of cultural and educational activities.
  • The commemoration of Jutland casualties buried in Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
  • Commemorative events at Naval memorials in Portsmouth, Plymouth, Chatham and the Merchant Navy Memorial at Tower Hill.
  • Commemorative activity in Germany in Wilhelmshaven, home to the German High Seas fleet, and at the Laboe Naval memorial in Kiel.

St Magnus International Festival: 17th-26th June.  It will be the 40th Anniversary of the festival which will be celebrating with 10 days of events.  The programme will feature the BBC Symphony Orchestra who made their first visit to the Festival in 2013.
